WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?

RIDGEDALE FARM AB WHAT If you read different books about Permaculture Design you will find different people have slightly different definitions as well as different sets of design principles they like to use. You may also begin to see they are all very similar and approaching the same objectives, so here's our take on it. As integrationists we also draw heavily on the work of Keyline® Design and Holistic Management® “Permaculture consciously and intelligently integrates regenerative agricultural ecosystems with socially just environments to produce fulfilling, stable and ethically sound livelihoods through whole systems management. Reflecting natural patterns, flows and relationships, permaculture design functionally interconnects diverse elements in highly cooperative and mutually beneficial arrangements that display robust energy efficiency and abundance of yield. The ethic of reinvesting surplus into natural and social forms of capital promotes care of all beings and the planetary systems.” Richard Perkins Here is a collection of the founder of Permaculture's principles' from their seminal works; Bill Mollison, Permaculture: A Designers' Manual (1988) & Introduction to Permaculture (1991)

  • Relative location

  • Each element performs multiple functions

  • Each function is supported by many elements

  • Energy efficient planning

  • Using biological resources

  • Energy cycling

  • Small-scale intensive systems

  • Natural plant succession and stacking

  • Polyculture and diversity of species

  • Increasing "edge" within a system

  • Observe and replicate natural patterns

  • Pay attention to scale

  • Attitude

David Holmgren, Permaculture: Principles & Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2002)

  • Observe and Interact

  • Catch and Store Energy

  • Obtain a Yield

  • Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback

  • Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services

  • Produce No Waste

  • Design from Patterns to Details

  • Integrate Rather than Segregate

  • Use Small and Slow Solutions

  • Use and Value Diversity

  • Use Edges and Value the Marginal

  • Creatively Use and Respond to Change
